Timber Flooring

Absolutely! Despite the term “engineered,” the wood is not synthetic. Unlike laminate flooring, which uses high-density fiberboard (HDF) to mimic timber’s appearance, engineered timber flooring is made from real wood. Each board is constructed with layers of different types of timber to enhance durability and stability.

Engineered timber floorboards are crafted to provide superior performance benefits compared to solid hardwood, including enhanced stability and sustainability. Made entirely from real wood, they deliver an authentic look and feel. The layered construction is specifically designed to resist warping and cupping caused by temperature fluctuations, making them more stable in humid conditions.

Engineered timber floorboards are made by joining multiple layers of wood to create a single floorboard. The boards consist of a core of layered pine, ply, or other species of wood with the top surface layer being natural solid wood that’s coloured and lacquered.

Engineered refers to the way in which the timber flooring plank is constructed. An engineered timber flooring plank consists of multiple layers as opposed to solid timber which is one single layer, or one single solid plank of wood.

Other Flooring

Hybrid flooring combines the best features of multiple materials for exceptional performance. The stone-polymer core ensures both flexibility and durability, while the vinyl surface layer protects the printed timber grain design and resists wear and tear. Additionally, the pre-attached underlay simplifies installation, eliminating the need for a separate underlay before laying the boards.

Thanks to its tough surface layer and durable core, laminate flooring is exceptionally resistant to scratches, impacts, and daily wear. It outlasts hardwood, vinyl, and carpet in demanding environments, making it an excellent choice for homes with pets, children, or frequent high-heel use.

Hybrid flooring is a product that combines multiple different materials together into one easy-to-install product. The planks in all our our hybrid flooring ranges are made from a stone-polymer core, a durable ‘timber-look’ vinyl surface layer, and an underlay already applied to the back of the board.

Laminate flooring is a highly durable and wear-resistant flooring option made up of four layers. It features a stain- and scratch-resistant overlay, a design layer with a high-resolution timber print, a robust high-density fibreboard core that’s moisture-resistant, and a balancing layer that ensures stability after installation.

Flooring Installation

At The Oak Lab, we employ the glue-down method for all our engineered European oak timber flooring installations. This technique involves securely adhering the engineered timber flooring directly to the subfloor using a high-quality adhesive. An even layer of bonding agent is applied to the subfloor and/or the back of each plank, which, combined with a tongue-and-groove system, ensures straightforward installation and tightly sealed joins. Additionally, the adhesive serves as a moisture barrier, providing extra protection for the timber flooring above.

Hybrid flooring uses a “floating” installation method. Since all our hybrid flooring products come with built-in underlay, the planks are laid directly over the subfloor without adhesive. The planks are connected using a click-lock system called Uniclic, where each plank clicks into place and locks over the subfloor. As no glue is used, the planks can be easily removed if you ever need to replace any.

Similar to hybrid flooring, laminate flooring is installed using the “floating” method. However, laminate flooring does not come with built-in underlay, so a separate underlay must be installed over the subfloor before the laminate planks. Once the underlay is in place, the laminate boards are connected using the Uniclic click-lock system, locking each plank over the underlay. Like hybrid flooring, laminate flooring is not glued down, allowing for easy removal if needed.

Care & Maintenance

At The Oak Lab, we believe caring for engineered timber flooring should be simple. Regular sweeping or vacuuming is essential to remove dirt and debris that can cause micro-scratches, which over time may dull and damage the floor’s surface. When it’s time to mop, avoid steam mops or traditional wet mopping methods used for tiles. Instead, opt for a lightly damp mop that leaves no excess water on the floor, as standing water can lead to damage and swelling at the plank joins. For the best results, we recommend using a dedicated engineered timber floor cleaning solution paired with a microfiber spray mop. This not only keeps your floors spotless but also helps protect their surface. Always clean spills immediately to prevent stains or damage. To maintain the fresh look of your hybrid flooring, regularly sweep and vacuum to remove dirt and debris that may cause surface scratches. Clean up spills and accidents promptly to avoid potential damage.

When mopping, use a dry or lightly damp mop (never wet) or a spray mop with a microfiber pad and a hybrid floor cleaner. Specialized cleaners and microfiber mops are ideal for keeping your floors looking newer for longer.

Keep your laminate flooring in great shape by routinely sweeping and vacuuming to minimize dirt and debris that could lead to scratches. Wipe up spills quickly to prevent damage or staining.

For mopping, opt for a dry or slightly damp mop (never wet) or a spray mop with a microfiber pad and a dedicated laminate floor cleaner. These tools will help maintain the floor’s appearance and extend its lifespan.
